The useful part of the Pear label is the relationship between the bust and full-hip measurements—not a clothing size or a visual ideal.

A Pear body shape, sometimes called Triangle, describes a proportion pattern in which the full hips are wider than the bust. The difference may be subtle or more noticeable, and the waist can be narrow, moderate, or close to the bust measurement. The label does not say where you carry weight, how tall you are, how fit you are, or what you should wear.

People with a Pear result do not all look alike. Hip width can come from pelvic structure, muscle, soft tissue, or the point at which the tape reaches the fullest part of the seat. Bust shape, shoulder width, torso length, posture, and garment construction all affect the silhouette you see in a mirror. A three-measurement category cannot capture every one of those details.

Use the result as practical vocabulary. It can help explain why a garment that feels comfortable through the shoulders is tight through the seat, or why trousers that fit the hips need adjustment at the waist. It is not a diagnosis, a beauty ranking, or a rulebook for personal style.

Measure bust and full hips

For the Pear comparison, the calculator uses your bust and full-hip values. Full hips means the widest circumference around the hips and seat, not the upper hip bones.

Check Hourglass first

The calculator first checks whether your upper body and hips are balanced and whether the waist is clearly smaller. An optional shoulder measurement can affect that earlier Hourglass check when it is larger than the bust.

Check the hip-to-bust difference

If the Hourglass conditions do not apply, the calculator returns Pear when full hips are at least 5% wider than the bust. For example, with a 36-inch bust, hips of 37.8 inches or more meet this comparison threshold.

Treat boundary results carefully

A difference close to 5% can move with tape placement or normal body changes. Repeat your measurements and read the neighboring guides when your result sits near a boundary.

How to Measure for a Pear Body Shape Result

Use a soft tape over light clothing or underwear. Stand naturally, keep the tape level, and measure each point twice before treating a close result as meaningful.

Wrap the tape around the fullest part of the bust and across the back. Keep it parallel to the floor and close to the body without compressing it. Bra size is not a substitute for a body circumference, because cup and band labels are not the same measurement.

A Pear result has full hips that are proportionally wider than the bust. An Hourglass result keeps the upper-body reference and full hips close, while the waist is clearly smaller than both. A narrow waist by itself therefore does not make a result Hourglass.

Fit can make the distinction useful. A Pear pattern may need more garment room at the hips and seat than at the bust. An Hourglass pattern may need room at both bust and hips but less at the waist. These are fit tendencies, not guarantees: rise, fabric stretch, darts, and brand patterns can matter just as much.

A Pear result differs because the hips pass the calculator's 5% difference from the bust. If your values are very close to that line, remeasure before assigning much importance to the label.

An Inverted Triangle result moves in the other direction: the bust is at least 5% wider than the hips in this calculator's female logic. Natural Variation Within a Pear Result

Tape measurements describe circumference; they do not describe every feature that affects fit or appearance.

One Pear body may have a pronounced waist, while another is more even through the midsection. Some people have fuller hips at the side, others through the seat, and others have a more athletic lower body. The vertical position of the waist, thigh shape, shoulder line, and torso length all influence how clothing hangs without changing the basic hip-to-bust relationship.

You may encounter labels such as soft Pear, athletic Pear, bottom Pear, or classic Triangle. These can be informal ways to describe visual variation, but they are not separate outputs from this calculator. Start with the broad result, then pay attention to your own garment pressure points, gaps, excess fabric, and movement needs.

A Pear proportion can make the hip and seat measurement the limiting point when choosing trousers, skirts, and fitted dresses.

Trousers may fit through the hips and thighs but gap at the back waist. A skirt or dress may need a larger size to move comfortably at the seat, leaving more room at the waist or bust. In non-stretch fabrics, pockets can pull open and side seams can shift forward when there is not enough hip ease.

These are garment-pattern mismatches, not problems with your body. Compare a garment's finished hip measurement with your own, and consider rise, stretch, seam allowance, and fabric weight. Choosing the size that fits the hardest-to-alter hip area and adjusting the waist can be more practical than forcing a smaller size.
