Prepare once, measure twice
Consistent conditions matter more than trying to force a perfectly exact number.
Choose a flexible sewing tape that wraps smoothly around the body. A rigid ruler or metal construction tape will not follow curves reliably.
Measure over underwear or close-fitting, lightweight clothing. Thick layers, padded garments, and bulky pockets can change the circumference.
Keep feet in the position described for each measurement, relax your shoulders, breathe normally, and avoid pulling in your stomach or changing posture.
Use a mirror or ask another person to check the back. A tape that slopes up or down can produce a larger or smaller result.
The tape should touch the body without compressing soft tissue. You should be able to breathe normally while it stays in place.
Measure twice. If the values differ noticeably, reset your stance and tape placement, then take a third measurement.
Bust, natural waist, and full hips are required by the current female body-shape calculation. High hip is useful descriptive and clothing-fit information, but it is not currently used to select the result.
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of the bust and across the shoulder blades. Keep it horizontal, with arms resting naturally at your sides. Do not lift the chest, flatten the bust, or pull the tape tight. If you wear a bra, use one that does not heavily compress or add volume. Bra size is not a substitute because cup and band labels are not body circumferences.
Find the natural crease between the bottom of the ribs and the top of the hip bones, often above the belly button. Bend gently to one side if you need help locating it, then return to a neutral stance. Relax your stomach and breathe normally. Do not assume the waistband of jeans or a skirt marks your natural waist.
Stand with feet close together and wrap the tape around the fullest circumference of the hips and seat. The widest point may be lower than the upper hip bones and may be easier to find by moving the tape slightly up and down. Use a mirror to keep the tape parallel to the floor, especially across the seat.
Measure around the upper hip area, commonly about 3–4 inches or 7–10 centimeters below the natural waist, around the top of the hip bones. Keep the tape level. High hip is different from full hips: it sits higher and usually does not include the fullest part of the seat. Record both separately rather than substituting one for the other.
Understand proportions
The bust-to-waist ratio describes how defined your waist is relative to your upper body. It is useful for clothing fit and body-shape research, but it is only one part of the calculation.
To calculate your bust-to-waist ratio, divide your bust measurement by your natural waist measurement. Use the same unit for both values; inches and centimeters produce the same ratio when used consistently.
Example A
Bust = 38″ and waist = 28″
38 ÷ 28 = 1.36
Example B
Bust = 36″ and waist = 33″
36 ÷ 33 = 1.09
A higher ratio means a more defined waist relative to your bust. As a rough clothing-fit reference, a ratio above about 1.33 suggests a waist at or below 75% of the bust; ratios closer to 1.0 describe a waist that is closer to the bust measurement. These are descriptive ranges, not universal body-shape rules.

⚠️ Important: Bust-to-waist ratio is only one part of body-shape classification. The current calculator also checks upper-body-to-hip balance and uses the smaller upper or hip reference for its waist rule. A defined waist with hips much wider than the bust may point toward Pear rather than Hourglass.
These ratios answer different questions. Bust-to-waist ratio describes the curve from the upper torso to the middle and is useful for clothing-fit and body-shape discussions. Waist-to-hip ratio compares the waist with the lower body and is used in other clothing, fitness, and health contexts. Do not substitute one ratio for the other.
The most useful approach is to keep the measurements consistent, read the calculator's actual rules, and treat any category as a starting point rather than a permanent label.
Do not interchange them
These measurements answer different clothing-fit questions.
High hip follows the upper pelvic area below the natural waist. Full hips circle the widest part of the hips and seat. On some bodies the two points are close; on others the fullest point sits considerably lower or farther outward. That difference can affect trouser rise, skirt shaping, waistband fit, and how a garment moves from waist to seat.
When a calculator asks for hips without further explanation, it usually means full hips. Entering high hip in that field can make the lower-body measurement too small and may change a body-shape result.
Current tool boundary
No. The current classification function does not use the high-hip value.
The female result currently uses bust, natural waist, and full hips, with shoulders available as an optional upper-body reference for the Hourglass check. High hip can still be useful for comparing clothing size charts or understanding upper-hip fit, but entering it does not change the body-shape category.
This distinction is stated openly so you can understand what each field contributes instead of assuming that every recorded number affects the formula.
Optional advanced measurement
Shoulder measurements vary by method, so use the same method every time.
For a shoulder circumference, wrap the tape around the broadest part of both shoulders and upper back, allowing it to pass across the outer shoulder points. Keep your arms relaxed and ask another person to help if possible; holding and reading the tape yourself can change your posture.
The current female calculator uses the larger of bust or optional shoulder circumference as the upper-body reference during the Hourglass balance check. Its later Pear and Inverted Triangle direction checks compare bust and full hips. For the male profile, shoulders are used as the upper-body value when supplied; otherwise chest is used.
Some clothing guides use a straight shoulder-width measurement from shoulder point to shoulder point instead of a circumference. Do not mix that flat width with a calculator field expecting a circumference.
Common causes of inconsistent results
Most surprising changes come from measuring a different landmark or changing tape tension.
Clothing can sit above or below the natural waist. Find the torso crease first, then measure that point.
Move the tape until you find the widest circumference around hips and seat. High hip and full hips are separate values.
A lower tape at the back or side can add circumference. Check the complete loop in a mirror.
Compression creates a smaller number and an unrealistic clothing reference. Use close contact without indentation.
The ratios work in either unit, but every value in one calculation must use the same unit.
Keep the same natural stance and normal breathing. Do not flex, arch, twist, or hold your breath for one measurement.
Make the numbers comparable
A repeatable method is more useful than chasing a false level of precision.
Record the date, unit, clothing layer, and measurement landmarks. If you plan to compare measurements over time, measure under similar conditions and preferably at a similar time of day. Normal breathing, meals, hydration, menstrual cycles, training, and posture can produce small changes.
Round consistently rather than mixing whole numbers, halves, and many decimals without reason. A quarter inch or half centimeter is usually sufficient for personal clothing research. When a result sits close to a classification boundary, repeat all three required measurements and read both neighboring body-shape guides.
Do not treat ordinary variation as an error or a health signal. This guide and calculator are educational tools for proportions and clothing fit, not medical assessment.
From tape to result
The tool compares relationships, so consistency across fields matters more than the choice of inches or centimeters.
Select inches or centimeters and enter every circumference in that same unit. The resulting ratios are equivalent.
For the female profile, enter bust, natural waist, and full hips. For the male profile, the chest field serves as the upper-body measurement unless shoulders are supplied.
Shoulders are optional. Use a circumference method and do not enter a flat shoulder width into a circumference field.
